Il genere Hibiscus, comprende
circa trecento specie, appartiene alla famiglia delle Malvaceae
ed è originario delle regioni tropicali e subtropicali.
I fiori dell'hibiscus hanno lunghi stami gialli sporgenti dal
centro dei petali, vivacemente colorati.
Nel genere, primeggia il rosa-sinensis, che viene coltivato
per la bellezza dei suoi fiori. Vi
è poi l'esculentus, coltivato come ortaggio, i cui legumi
giovani vengono utilizzati cotti in minestre e stufati; il cannibinus
ed il tiliaceus sono coltivati nelle regioni tropicali per la
produzione di fibre tessili; dai semi dell'abelmoschus, invece,
viene estratto un olio che profuma di muschio e che viene utilizzato
nell'industria della profumeria, mentre dai calici del sabdariffa
si ricava addirittura il Karkadé, gradevole e aromatica
bevanda.
